taylor who...

Hi I'm Taylor Maki and I make hand made wool rugs. In 2021 I started making runners, coasters and table mats to be sold online and in retail stores. Since then, I have steered my focus to creating large scale art pieces, and have been very fortunate to participate in group shows and pursue commission work by 2023. I love rugs as a medium because my designs get to have a long life comforting whoever is living on them.

Interview

We're excited to have you here. To start off, we'd love to get to know you! Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do!?

My name is Taylor Maki and I live in Kelowna, BC Canada. I make rugs from home, big and small, and I love to do it!!

Can you walk us through your creative process for this piece? What were the key stages, and how did your initial vision evolve throughout the process?

This design came from a pencil drawing I did of an “X" sort of shape. I took a photo on my iPad and traced it so I could add colour and find the right combination. The red stars looked bright against the dusty blue and pink. Then I free handed the drawing on to my canvas and tufted it. I wanted this rug to hang on the wall for this show so I scavenged for materials in my mom’s garage :)

The concept of a vortex often implies a powerful force or transformative energy. Can you interpret this idea within your art, and were there techniques used to convey this sense?

I used symmetry in this design and faced the repetitive shapes to face towards the centre of the rug, drawing the viewer into its vortex. The stars are the brightest red to guide you into your next fate >:)

In a scenario where everyday objects are sent through a vortex, which one would you choose to send. You decide who is on the other side...

I would send a big wet kiss and two fat golden thumbs up to my friends I miss back in Montreal

What are some key influences or experiences that have shaped your artistic practice?

My influence comes from colour first most of the time. I find myself detecting colours in photos and in real life and love how usual neutral and muddy tones can be powerful when bouncing off each other, and how the smallest bit of a contrasting or vibrant colour can make everything come together. Also, my experience living in Montreal for 3 years shaped my art by being around so many artists making cool stuff all the time and being sources for one another, without them I wouldn’t know it was possible make anything !!!!!!

Anything else to add?
